Below is a list of definitions for terms used on our site and in the industry, for your convenience.


asset: any digital file that is useful to your organization


asset management: a system for organizing your group's digital files


color correction: adjusting the colors and tones in an image or video to make it more pleasing and/or match a reference sample or color value


colorimetry: the science of measuring colors


colorization: the art of digitally changing the color appearance of an item


compositing: the art of combining different images into a single image


configurator: a web module that allow users to choose different color, texture, and structural options for an item and view them in real-time


draping: the art of changing the appearance of the color, texture, and pattern of an item digitally


dynamic imaging: a process in which images are created "on-the-fly," as needed, rather than pre-created


encryption: scrambling data so it's nearly impossible for a person to view without the proper decryption key; see "SSL"


image server: a server application that enables dynamic imaging


localization: the process of translating software or a document to another language and/or region


metadata: information about a digital file; examples of metadata for a photo would include the type of camera used, photographer, the date it was captured, settings used, etc.


personalization: a type of dynamic imaging in which items or documents are customized dynamically with a customer's name, initials, or other identifying information


product visualization: the suite of technologies that enable users to view different color, texture, and structural options available for an item


retouching: the art of refining and enhancing visual media, including color correction, compositing, and structural touch-ups


SaaS ("Software as a Service"): software that is not sold outright to customers, but offered as a service hosted on a vendor's web servers, usually priced by subscription or by a "pay as you go" model


SSL: Secure Socket Layers is a security protocol that scrambles or "encrypts" data as it is sent to and from a browser


watermark: an overlay placed over an image that renders the image difficult to use; used to protect copyright and access interests


workflow automation: techniques to program various tasks in a workflow that are ordinarily done manually
